I am the Iron Chef!

So yesterday it was Civil Rights Day, or Martin Luther King, Jr Day. And I thought about all the important things that have happened since the Civil Rights movement and the positive ramifications of the Civil Rights Act. And I just wanted to say thanks to the brave people who made this country and its citizens be better. As a country and a people, we needed our eyes to be open and I'm so grateful that things are not the way they were, and are on the way to becoming even better.

Yesterday I also participated in a little pseudo-Iron Chef competition with some people in my neighborhood. It was super fun to cook under the pressure of competition (even if it wasn't actually very fierce, we are all friends after all). The secret ingredient, you ask? GINGER! Ha, it was great. I cooked up a ginger beef lo mein (aka "the noodle dish") for my savory food and then some chicken and fruit salad with ginger syrup for my sweet dish. The noodle dish won (surprisingly), but I personally enjoyed what my friends' husbands' made. One made this awesome ginger slushee and the other this really tasty curry. The best part was being with friends and getting to cook. Actually, strike that, the best part was eating the ginger and mango fruit tart that my friend made for dessert. I wish I had taken pictures of the end products, but we were too busy getting them to the judges (my husband, and my two friends) to worry about capturing the moment.

It is just days like this that make me so happy and filled with joy that I am here in a great country with great friends and great food. ALLEZ CUISINE!!
